Birmingham native wins third game of Jeopardy!

A Birmingham native competing on Jeopardy! won for the third night on Friday after defeating a 15-day champion on his debut night earlier this week.

Drew Basile, 23, has now won $53,282 since Wednesday night on the game show.

He emerged victorious in the latest game of a tie after correctly calling the Doppler effect based on a clue about the phenomenon of wave frequency, punching the air in celebration. He defeated government PR professional Josh Heit and substitute teacher Richelle Brown.

Basile had given the correct answer – Hank Aaron – in Final Jeopardy! came back with a clue about a long-broken baseball record, but he didn’t bet any money, so he tied with Heit.

Basile has a competitive spirit and is now familiar with television appearances, having competed on the 45th season of Survivor.

But he told The Detroit News in an interview Friday morning that entering the Jeopardy! with low expectations for herself, calling Adriana Harmeyer “one of the best players in history”. He just felt lucky that he made the move to get on the show.

“It was a huge rush,” he said of his debut win on the night. “And to see it on TV again after a month of waiting for it to be edited, it’s just an absolute pleasure.”

Basile answered 21 questions correctly on his first night. His second victory Thursday placed him among what the series calls “giant killers” — contenders who best a winner who has been in a series. He credits his experience on the trivia team at the University of Detroit Jesuit High for the speed needed to be the first responder. Speed at the bell is so critical because many of the questions themselves are not difficult, he said.

“That speed on the bell for Jeopardy — it’s not everything, but it’s the lion’s share, because you make such a competent opposition,” Basile said in an interview.

Basile didn’t have much time to brush up on his trivia knowledge after finding out he would be competing on the show, but he did manage to study some subjects like movies, television and military history, which he said was one of his strengths .

The 23-year-old has just completed a master’s degree in English literature at England’s Oxford University and said he is about to start another degree in intellectual history. Ironically, Basile said, he feels he has work to do to catch up to his peers.

“Kids are smart, I tell you,” Basile said. “I’m pretty top there at Oxford, so I’ve got some catching up to do.”
