Historic cinema-turned-school in Coventry for sale for £800,000

A former cinema-turned-school has been put up for sale in Coventry for “potential redevelopment and investment opportunity”. The building, known as ‘The Astoria’, on Albany Road in Earlsdon, is on the market for £800,000.

It was originally purpose-built as a cinema and was converted into a two-storey school. It was originally built in 1922 as ‘The Broadway Cinema’ in an ‘art deco’ style but later changed its name to ‘The Astoria’ and is built of solid brick walls with a flat roof behind a parapet wall , the list shows.




Improvements have been made over the years, including the provision of a first floor with a stage and mezzanine area, a rear fire escape, alterations to the existing external stairs at the front, plus a ramp and disabled access.

The ground floor comprises a large reception area with toilets and offices and the front with individual music rooms, teaching areas and a refectory which includes a kitchen area, meeting area and toilets. The first floor is accessed by a lift and stairs on either side of the rear building and includes a large concert hall with a stage and staging areas.

The mezzanine area overlooks and is accessed from the first floor concert hall as well as separate staircases on either side of the building at the front and provides an open plan area as well as offices, a library and toilets. The side of the building has another entrance and exit to a marked eight-space car parking area with access to Winifred Boulevard.

The property is situated on the eastern side of Albany Road close to the junction with Winifred Avenue in a cul-de-sac and also close to Coventry city centre. Coventry Rail Station is also 0.5 miles away.
