Tyler Adams recently revealed that Leeds United 22/23 teammate Weston McKennie could struggle as he himself picked up an injury shortly after arriving.

Leeds’ status as a Championship side comes down to several long-running errors made by the club in the Premier League, with transfer blunders being a massive contributor.

It’s safe to say that Jesse Marsch’s signings haven’t had a high success rate at all, with only Tyler Adams from the USMNT or Red Bull being a success.

Tyler Adams shares his verdict on the Weston McKennie fights in Leeds

Weston McKennie has been an obvious failure since the 22/23 signings, unable to keep up with the pace of the Premier League for a couple of reasons: whether it’s the fact that January signings rarely hit the mark overall, the fact that it was” doesn’t quite fit or that he just wasn’t putting in the effort.

However, Adams spoke to the Daily Mail this month to say he believes his own hamstring injury has scuppered McKennie’s chances of being a hit at Elland Road.

He had this to say, while confirming that he played a big part in recommending McKennie to Marsch and the club’s staff:

“(Then) I got hurt, it blew up in his face.

“It was incredibly hard for me … I feel in a way that I let him down.”

Will Leeds be promoted next season?

Is Adams right in saying why McKennie failed at Leeds?

At the time of McKennie’s signing, it looked like Leeds had added a good option to their depth after a solid spell at the World Cup alongside Adams in the USMNT midfield.

However, it quickly became apparent, outside of a few flashes of quality, that it just wasn’t up to snuff, and that was well before Adams’ injury in mid-March.

Adams’ injury didn’t help our midfield cohesion until April and May, but there’s a lot more to why McKennie and others haven’t worked for us.

He arrived at Leeds unfit, and then on the pitch he seemed unwilling to make the switch to keep Leeds in the top flight – but he was certainly not alone in that matter.

His form for Juventus, which has seemingly earned him a long-awaited move to the Premier League, has shown he has the quality we need in 2023, but it just hasn’t panned out.

Adams is right to point out that his recommendation was unfortunate because he didn’t get many opportunities to start alongside McKennie.
