LIVE: Firefighters are responding to a huge building fire near downtown

Firefighters are responding to a large fire near Rochdale town centre.

The fire broke out at a building in Summer Street shortly before 2pm today (Saturday). Images shared on social media show thick plumes of black smoke billowing from the property.




Footage from the scene also shows firefighters trying to put out the flames. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just before 2pm today (Saturday, June 22) firefighters were called to reports of a fire at a property shop on Summer Street in Rochdale.

“Eight fire engines from Rochdale, Heywood, Littleborough, Oldham, Hollins, Blackley and Ashton fire stations are currently at the scene and crews are working hard to keep the area safe.”

Residents told to avoid the area and “keep doors and windows closed”

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) is advising people living near the scene to keep their doors and windows closed.

The smoke can be seen for miles around

Eyewitnesses reported that they could see the smoke for miles around.
