Autistic son saves mother from brutal attack

An eight-year-old autistic boy has been hailed a hero after he bravely hit his mum’s attacker with a tire lever and helped her escape to a neighboring property.

Mother-of-two Becky Mulcahy answered a knock on her door on September 11 last year to find her partner’s trusted friend Brent Gilbert.

After allowing her inside, Gilbert allegedly became enraged when she told him she had no prescription drugs or cash to give.

“Then he stabbed me right between the eyes, then he stabbed me (again) … I got seven in the face, two in the top of the head,” she said.

The brutal attack took place in front of Mrs Mulcahy’s two children – eight-year-old Lachie and six-year-old Shelbie.

“My children were covered in blood,” she said.

Ms Mulcahy was stabbed more than 20 times before Lachie picked up a tire lever and belted her attacker.

“He held the back of my head, put a knife to my chest and was going to finish me off and that’s when Lachie went over the top,” she said.

The two children helped Mrs Mulcahy try to get to the next-door neighbour’s house, with a ladder helping the injured mum to the doorstep.

“The whole way there I knew I was dying in front of my children,” she said.

“I wasn’t going to do that.”

Mrs Mulcahy spent the next four days in a coma at the Alfred Hospital.

“I still dream about the attack every night,” she said.

“I’m still fighting for my life every night in my dreams.”

Thirty-five-year-old Brent Gilbert pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and will be sentenced in November.
