IN PICTURES: Criminals jailed in Greater Manchester this week, including teenage killers, a fraudster and a prison officer

As one grieving family looked on, two other families wept as their young children were led to the docks at Manchester Crown Court.

Nathaniel Shani was just 14 years old when he was brutally stabbed in the neck by a teenager. Another teenager “encouraged” him, telling him to “go for it.”

Both were found guilty at trial of the most serious crime in the criminal calendar. Both face life in prison. One is 14 and the other is 15 – they cannot be identified for legal reasons.

The family of Nathaniel, or Natie as he was affectionately called, are urgently looking for more to be done to raise awareness of knife crime.

In an emotional message, they said: “Say no to knives, no knife is too small.”

The two teenage killers, Boy A and Boy B, are among those starting terms behind bars this week. Others include a fraudster who sold pirated Sky boxes, a prison officer who smuggled drugs and phones into prison and a thug who attacked Manchester’s former mayor for wearing a poppy and Armed Forces medals.

A fraudster who went on the run after being convicted of selling pirated boxes giving illegal access to Sky TV, BT Sports and Virgin is finally behind bars. Michael Hornung, then 38, of Hyde, Tameside, was jailed for four-and-a-half years in June 2022 for selling unauthorized decoders, selling articles to be used in fraud and advertising for the sale of unauthorized decoders .

But he did not turn up to be sentenced, Minshull Street Court heard he fled to Turkish-controlled Northern Cyprus, a territory with which the UK has no extradition treaty. On 2 June, Hornung was arrested in Cyprus by the Cypriot authorities following an operation by the National Crime Agency and the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) and agreed to be extradited to the United Kingdom to serve his sentence.

Two teenagers have been jailed for life for killing 14-year-old Nathaniel Shani.

Nathaniel Shani sadly died after being stabbed in the neck in an alleyway in Harpurhey on 15 September 2023. Two boys, Boy A, aged 15, and Boy B, aged 14, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were found guilty of murder following a trial at Manchester Crown Court earlier this year.

The court heard that Nathaniel died following a dispute over the theft of cannabis. Nathaniel and Boy A met in an alley off Tavistock Square as part of a “fight to settle disputes”, the court heard.

On the day of the crime, the cannabis had been stolen from a friend of Nathaniel’s by Boy B. “Nathaniel saw this as a loss of face for himself and his group,” said prosecutor Jason Pitter KC.

An arrangement was made to meet to “sort things out”, the court was told. “For Nathaniel, this, the prosecution says, involved a one-on-one fight with Boy A,” the prosecutor said.

Nathaniel arrived at the square around 6pm and met Boy A and Boy B. During the ensuing confrontation, Nathaniel punched Boy A, who pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the neck.

Nathaniel was seen clutching his neck after being stabbed, before collapsing in the box. He was declared dead at 19.08.
