Danny Buderus is one of Australian Rugby League’s all-time greats. The 2004 Dally M Player of the Year and three-time Dally M Hooker of the Year, had a long and distinguished NRL career with the Newcastle Knights. He also played for Leeds Rhinos and was a teammate of Rob Burrow.

Buderus flew to the UK to attend tributes to Burrow following his tragic death from motor neurone disease aged 41. A packed Headingley Stadium paid an emotional tribute to Burrow last night, which also saw 80 of Burrow’s former teammates reunited. as part of the celebration of Burrow’s life.

Buderus won a grand final with the Rhinos in 2011 and played a part in the biggest grand final try, laying on the final pass for Burrow on the halfway line as the Leeds legend danced his way through the St Helens defense and in the history of Rugby League. books.

Interviewed as part of Sky Sports’ coverage of the game, Buderus reflected on his time at Leeds and his relationship with Rob Burrow. Buderus traveled from Australia to be part of the celebration of Burrow’s life. However, he believes the sacrifice made was a small price to pay to join the Burrow tributes. Buderus said:

“It’s a small price to pay to get on a plane for a day and come here. It was so good to walk around and see all the familiar faces. Jonesy called me and said, it’s probably impossible, but I said it’s possible, so let’s do it. I am very privileged and honored to be here tonight.”

“He looked after me, but he’s always at people in the dressing room, but on the pitch, he was always going to win a game or win a moment, so he had a lot of them. A lot of success was due to Rob in the way he played the game.

“A lot of opposition coaches and back rowers tried to target Rob but he always put them on the back. So he always kept his hands up and he’s a special player, a special person.

Buderus missed Leeds’ 2009 Super League grand final triumph with a broken leg. But he managed to lift silverware in blue and amber as part of the Leeds side that made history by winning the 2011 Grand Final after finishing fifth in the table.

As mentioned above, Buderus claimed an assist for Burrow’s legendary try, passing the ball to him on the halfway line. Buderus said he had the best seat in the house for Burrow’s trial and that watching him duck and weave his way through St Helens is a memory he will cherish forever.

“There I had the best seat in the house. I watched him drift and drift, all of which was great. He made it the Field of Dreams that night and created a moment for us that we can always cherish.”
