rugby news | Leicester Tigers part ways with Dan McKellar, former Pumas and Wallabies coach Michael Cheika possible replacement

Premiership Rugby side Leicester Tigers have parted ways with Dan McKellar after just one season.

The team confirmed McKellar’s departure in a statement, which was labeled a “mutually agreed upon” decision between the two sides.

Several reports have linked former Argentina and Australia head coach Michael Cheika to the team.

McKellar joined the Tigers last February as a replacement for Steve Borthwick, who became England head coach following the sacking of Eddie Jones.

The Tigers finished eighth this year with nine wins and nine losses.

In a report in the UK Telegraph, it was said that McKellar presented his long-term vision to the club, who were not entirely convinced.

McKellar’s departure comes just weeks after the team confirmed Peter Hewat, Matt Parr and Dan Palmer as part of the coaching staff.

A club statement said: “Leicester Tigers can confirm the departure of Dan McKellar from his role as head coach with immediate effect.

“The decision was mutually agreed following extensive discussions regarding the future direction of the club.

“McKellar joined the Tigers in July 2023 from the Wallabies – where he was assistant coach for the Australian national team – and oversaw 30 matches for the Tigers in all competitions during the 23/24 campaign.

“The club has begun the process of finding a new head coach to lead the men’s program into the 24/25 season. Pre-season training for men’s players not on international duty begins on July 1 at Oval Park.

“We thank Dan for his contribution to Leicester Tigers and wish him, Carla, Amelie and Maya every success in the future.”

News that Cheika could replace McKellar comes just days after reports he was overlooked by the Parramatta Eels to coach the NRL side.

Josh Hannay and Jason Ryles are reportedly the frontrunners for that job, though Dean Young has emerged as a late contender.

Where McKellar goes after his one-year stint with the Tigers will be closely watched, with a return to Super Rugby Pacific an obvious option for the NSW Waratahs.
