London constituencies have guaranteed a new MP at the general election

Britain is waiting with bated breath to find out who will lead the country from the 4th of July. Many MPs will try to keep their seats, but some have decided to call it a day and not take part in the general election.

As a result, some constituencies will have a new person speaking for them in Parliament. Seven Tories and six Labor politicians ruled themselves out in London. Nationally, the number of MPs who quit exceeded the total since 1997, before Labor won a landslide victory under Tony Blair.

Among the Tories moving on to pastures new is Mike Freer, whose constituency office suffered fire damage in December. He told MyLondon in May that he had received death threats and was lucky to be alive after a near miss with Sir David Amess’ killer.

Sir Bob Neill represented Bromley and Chislehurst from 1997 to 2024. Paul Scully, who was MP for Sutton and Cheam, served not long ago as Minister for London.

In terms of work, Dame Harriet Harman, MP for the capital since 1974, was the mother of the House until Parliament was dissolved. Dame Margaret Hodge, who represented Barking from 1983 to 2024, also resigned.
