Wigan Warriors’ Liam Byrne was booked after his first tackle in scenes reminiscent of Adrian Morley

Liam Byrne channeled his inner Adrian Morley after being booked for his first tackle in Huddersfield Giants’ clash with Wigan Warriors. The Ireland international was sent off after being booked for a high tackle in the opening seconds of the Warriors’ clash with the West Yorkshire outfit.

Byrne, who was red-carded in Wigan’s Good Friday defeat to St Helens earlier this season, was involved in a fiery collision from the kick-off when he collided with Huddersfield Giants prop Matty English. The challenge was immediately penalized by match official Aaron Moore before the video referee intervened, making the penalty promotion a sin-bin.

He drew comparisons with Morley’s infamous red card almost 21 years ago. The legendary forward was sent off after a brutal tackle in the first tackle of Great Britain’s clash with Australia, Morley flattening Robbie Kearns.

That said, the loss of Byrne didn’t seem to hurt Wigan too much as he would go on to score a minute later with his first touch of the ball. Winger Liam Marshall scored a breakaway try after a Huddersfield kick fell kindly for him.

Matt Peet’s side would go into the break with a 12-6 lead, Bevan French adding another Wigan try, although Elliot Wallis responded for the Giants with a spectacular solo try.
