Refugee exhibition opens in Coventry as creator talks of need for ‘compassion’ for those trying to find a home

In a poignant nod to Refugee Week, the upcoming Voices Unveiled exhibition was launched at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum in Coventry on Wednesday 19 June. The display highlights the remarkable stories of refugee women who have made their home in the UK.

Voices Unveiled is a compelling portrait exhibition that illuminates the resilience and courage of refugee women. Through powerful images and personal accounts, the exhibition aims to cultivate understanding and compassion for those who have faced the daunting task of starting over in an unfamiliar country.

Oscar, the creative mind behind the exhibition, draws on his own experiences as part of a refugee family. Reflecting on a quote from Malala Yousafzai, he says, “A home is where you feel loved, safe and cherished. For me, home has been anywhere I find safety, acceptance and belonging. Most of my life was not my choice. I was born into a family of refugees, and my country of birth was not my country of birth. This year’s theme for Refugee Week is “Our Home”. My goal with this exhibit is to help all of us extend grace, compassion, and love to those of us who are trying to find our home in a foreign land.”

The exhibition is more than just a collection of photographs; it is a powerful narrative that encapsulates the human spirit’s capacity to endure and hope. Each portrait is paired with the personal story of the woman depicted, providing insight into her journey and the immense strength required to establish a new life.

In addition to the portraits, Voices Unveiled will host workshops and discussions aimed at improving the community’s understanding of the refugee experience. These sessions are designed to foster dialogue and reflection, inviting visitors to engage with the broader narratives and themes of home and belonging.

Indy Donald, Community Engagement Coordinator at Herbert, said: “We are really proud and excited to welcome this important collection to our location.”
