Match of the Day host Gary Lineker gleefully described Alan Hansen’s discharge from hospital as “the best news ever”.

Former Liverpool and Scotland defender Hansen, a long-serving member of the BBC programme, has been feeling very unwell, leading to his admission to hospital in early June. He was released on Sunday.

On Sunday afternoon, Liverpool issued the following statement: “Alan has been discharged from hospital today to continue his recovery at home.

“Alan, Janet, Adam, Lucy and family would like to thank everyone for their wonderful messages of love and support. It has been overwhelming and has helped enormously.”

Just two weeks ago, a Reds statement said Hansen was “seriously ill”. Fortunately, his condition is improving and he will now return home, the Mirror reports.

Expressing their gratitude, his family released a statement thanking fans for their uplifting messages of support. For his part, Gary Lineker echoed their sentiment, sharing his own reaction on his social media platform.
