Adrian Lam refuses to write off Leigh Leopards playoff hopes after Leeds loss

Leigh Leopards head coach Adrian Lam refused to rule out the possibility of his side breaking into the top six despite the huge setback they suffered in defeat against Leeds Rhinos.

A terrible start to the season saw the Leigh side win just one of their opening seven games and meant that in all likelihood the Leopards would need to win nine of their remaining fourteen before Friday night.

That defeat now makes the task even tougher, with the magic mark of 28 points looking unlikely given some of the tough fixtures Adrian Lam’s side have to play. Furthermore, they will have to play three games in ten days at the start of August to fit in the rescheduled game against Wigan Warriors.

Adrian Lam was asked after the defeat to Leeds about the prospects of making the top six, with the 18-10 loss hurting his side’s chances, but ruled nothing out.

Leigh Leopards had turned on the form, but the loss to Leeds certainly dampens their hopes, with the club likely to need to pick up 18 points from the available 26 to reach a realistic playoff benchmark.

The sixth-placed side have had 28 points or more in the last two seasons, but Adrian Lam refuses to get into the numbers, explaining it remains “week-to-week”.

He told LeopardsTV: “I try to stay with the coach every week. It’s difficult trying to look forward and do your numbers and stuff. So I will try to stay in the moment and be present with the day to day thing.

“We have a run of six games in a row away from home and this was number five. So next up is away to Wigan to finish that run, but then we’re the majority of 13 games, or the second half of the season, mostly at home.

“So there is still some hope for us and once these players come back I think it will be the first time next week we have a chance to field a full team. So I’m looking forward to that and staying positive with that mindset.”

He would then go on to explain which players are expected to return for the match against Wigan after the break, adding that Tom Amone has failed his HIA but due to the extended break he should be fine for that clash.

“I think with the international break next week it means we’ll get a few players back after that next round, Asiata will be available, Mulhern, Gaz O’Brien and Ollie Holmes as well, so maybe for the first time this year, we can get the full team to choose from.”
