Overnight closures on Bedminster roads in Bristol’s longest roadworks project

Two sections of the A38 will close at night from today (Monday 24 June) as part of Bristol’s longest ever roadworks scheme. Malago Road and Dolby Avenue in Bedminster will close from 8pm to 6am each day until Sunday.

Roads will be closed from the junction with Sheene Road to the junction with East Street. During the night closures, access to roads including Church Lane and Stafford Street will be restricted.

A diversion has been put in place for drivers around the road works. A weight limit on Catherine Mead Street has been temporarily suspended to accommodate the new diversion.

Starting from Sheene Road on the A38, drivers will follow the B3120 northbound on Cannon Street and turn right onto Dean Lane and right onto Catherine Mead Street, turn left onto Lombard Street (which leads to Saint Johns Road) and they will turn right onto the A370. Motorists will then follow the A38 towards East Street.

The road, which is currently on a one-way system, is part of a roadworks project that has taken more than two years to get to this point. Workmen dug up the road to install the Bedminster branch of the new district heating network, which will serve all the block of flats and student flats along Dalby Avenue and Malago Road. Eventually, the road will be realigned with a new provision for buses and bike lanes.

With much of Malago Road still open and unearthed and looking as it has for the past year or so, residents told Bristol Live in April they were worried contractors would not be finished this summer. With regular gridlock on alternative routes around the Malago Road closure – particularly St John’s Road and Catherine Mead Street, traders and residents have been watching closely to see when the work will be completed.
