Damaged stokies on the ground, ‘crying’ passengers and no luggage in Manchester airport chaos

Thousands of passengers at Manchester Airport are still facing delays today. A power outage in the early hours of Sunday led to the cancellation of 70 flights leaving Manchester Airport and 50 arriving flights.

Flights to Burgas, Mahon, Madrid, Melbourne, Amsterdam, Punta Cana and Cancun have been delayed so far this morning. It turns out that some passengers are still waiting to be reunited with their luggage.

Manchester Airport is now advising passengers to travel to the airport as normal today.

In a statement this morning, Manchester Airport said: “All our systems are operating as normal today so passengers are advised to prepare to travel as normal from Manchester Airport. This means going online to check the status of your flight before you depart and then after you. Airline instructions for when to arrive at the airport are likely to be slightly busier than usual due to affected passengers of cancellations yesterday, but we have extra staff and our resilience team helping us.

A number of StokeonTrentLive readers were caught up in the chaos at Manchester Airport.

Lisa Marie Mitchell said: “We sat on a TUI plane being held hostage. They fly all planes without baggage and if you don’t want to fly without, you lose all your vacation money. People in tears, as they will have. no bathing suits, sun cream, clothes or anything else.”

Kerry Rushton said: “I was told to travel as usual. I got to the parking lot, got on the bus to go to the airport, and now I’m told that our flight is canceled.”

Tracy Szymichowski said: “We were supposed to fly out at 6am on Sunday and arrive at our destination at 9pm – minus our luggage.”
