Sheffield United could be set for imminent cash boost

Sheffield United could be set for a major cash boost this summer if Everton sell Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Newcastle United. A product of the Blades academy, Calvert-Lewin was sold to the Toffees in August 2016 for around £1.5m after making a dozen first-team appearances for United.

Sheffield United are believed to be entitled to 20% of any future sales and a move away from Goodison Park in this window looks highly likely. The 27-year-old has 12 months left on his current Everton contract and has yet to express an interest in extending it.

According to The Telegraph , talks between Newcastle United and Everton have intensified as they consider the former England international as a replacement for back-up striker Callum Wilson, who is likely to leave Tyneside in the next few weeks.

Calvert-Lewin was described as a “complete” striker by Carlo Ancelotti in 2020, per a report from Sky Sports, and it was under the Italian club where the Sheffield-born striker would serve up the best form of his career. In 60 appearances in all competitions, Calvert-Lewin would have 29 goals under Ancelotti. Since then, he has scored just 15 goals in all competitions in three campaigns.

Teams are lining up to secure the services of Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Magpies are not alone in their pursuit; face competition from Premier League clubs West Ham and Brentford, all vying for the Everton striker’s signature. Italian giants AC Milan also joined. This comes as Milan search for a replacement for Olivier Giroud, who has since left for Los Angeles Football Club in the MLS.

Meanwhile, Everton are under significant financial pressure to complete the sale before PSR’s medical deadline of June 30. As a result, they set a substantial £37m price tag for Calvert-Lewin, according to Chronicle Live. The club’s need to balance its books adds urgency to the negotiations, potentially hastening the striker’s exit.

Calvert-Lewin’s sales fee would be a welcome cash boost for Sheffield United

This news will be music to the ears of Sheffield United as they have some financial problems along with the uncertain future of the property. If the quoted figure of £37m is accurate, then the Blades could be in a position to earn around £7.4m if they do indeed have a 20% sell-on clause.

While just over £7m is certainly not an eye-watering figure in today’s footballing world, this cash boost could come at the most ideal time for the Blades. United are rumored to be in talks to sign Peterborough United left-back Harrison Burrows for a fee of around £4m. So if Calvert-Lewin is sold, Sheffield United could use the fee they will receive from the sell-on clause and use it to cover the transfer fee for Burrows as well as his first year wages.
