Pirates of the Caribbean star Tamayo Perry dies after ‘shark attack’ as tributes pour in

A well-known surfer – who also appeared in a role in the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise – has tragically died following a suspected shark attack.

On Sunday, Honolulu Emergency Medical Services made the tragic announcement that Tamayo Perry was found unresponsive with multiple shark injuries. The 49-year-old surfer was off the coast of Goat Island, also known as Mokuauia, near Laie, Hawaii, when officials located him around 1 p.m. local time, according to information provided to the Star-Advertiser .




Following the tragic discovery, lifeguards brought his body back to shore using a jet ski, confirming his identity after informing his relatives. There is speculation from emergency personnel that Tamayo may have suffered multiple shark bites, indicating that this could be the second fatal incident on Oahu in a month, the Express reports.

“Tamayo Perry was a well-loved lifeguard, well-known on the North Shore, a world-renowned professional surfer around the world,” Acting Ocean Safety Chief Kurt Lager said in an emotional tribute. “Tamayo’s personality was infectious and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more.

“Condolences to Tamayo’s family and the entire lifeguard ohana. We ask for some privacy for his family at this time.”

Expressing his grief, Mayor Rick Blangiardi called Tamayo’s death a “tragic loss.” “Tamayo was a legendary and well-respected sailor (…) a great member of our Ocean Safety team; it’s very hard to imagine, so we just want to pay tribute to our boys,” Mayor Blangiardi said.

“I hope everyone wishes the family their best and respects the situation.” Jason Bitzer, a close friend of Tamayo, shared a heartfelt tribute on Facebook: “The things I saw! My brother in Christ, I love you, brah! Tamayo, I won’t get over this until I see you in heaven. Tamayo Perry. you were not my friend, you were my brother, the pain we collectively feel is immense.”
