Obituary: Brent Barto – What’s New

Brent Colby Barto, 82, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, died June 22, 2024. He was the husband of Judith (Mendoza) Barto. Born in Richland Center, WI on February 12, 1942, he was the son of the late Harold and Myrtle Barto.

Growing up in Wisconsin, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. After graduating from high school, Brent joined the US Navy and began a 23-year career that took him around the world. Throughout his career, he has deployed to the Mediterranean (7), Antarctica (2) and the North Atlantic (2). He served a year in Vietnam where he was a craft master on a river patrol boat. He retired as a quartermaster, first class petty officer. After retiring from the Navy, Brent continued his work at Naval Station Newport as a Federal Police Officer. During his second career as a training officer, he was injured on the job and had to take early retirement.

Brent is survived by his wife Judy Barto of Portsmouth, his children Scot Barto and Kari Blackwood, both of Alabama, his brothers; Curt Barto, Cary Barto, Ken Whipp, Beth Grub, Nanette Nelson, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Brent is preceded in death by his parents and a brother Wayne Barto.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, June 27, 2024 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial with military honors will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Newport Memorial Park, Middletown.
