Sheffield United and Stoke City are competing for Sam McCallum

Sheffield United and Stoke City are set to battle it out for Norwich City man Sam McCallum, according to Alan Nixon.

Sheffield United are preparing for life back in the Championship.

Chris Wilder’s side finished bottom of the Premier League and will compete again in the second leg.

Stoke City had a dreadful campaign last season. The Potters were in a relegation battle at one point and eventually finished 17th under Steven Schumacher.

Meanwhile, Norwich City finished in the top six and while they had a poor play-off run, the Canaries had a good season and gave new boss Johannes Hoff Thorup something to build on.

McCallum, 23, played 29 Championship games for Norwich City last season. The left-back scored once in the league and was a constant part of their team in the run.

However, despite featuring often, McCallum is set to become a free agent at the end of this month and there are two Championship teams hoping to land him this summer.

The Blades and Potters watch a move. Sheffield United are restricted in what they can spend at the moment due to ongoing takeover talks, but Nixon reports that a free agent with the right deal could be accepted by the hierarchy.

Who is this?

THE TEST STARTS!

Championship experience and potential

The 23-year-old has already made more than 100 second-tier appearances during spells at Coventry City, QPR and Norwich City.

He is a more than capable second tier player and would be a very good addition for both sides this summer.

The English full-back has time on his side as well and, in addition to his experience, he also has the potential for growth and development and a very valuable free transfer.

Room for improvement

Stoke City will be hoping to kick off next season. The Potters finished strongly last time but were generally not good enough and Schumacher must have his side look better next time.

Wilder needs to stabilize his club. Sheffield United will want to return to Premier League football as soon as possible, but for now they just need to focus on getting the foundations in place to keep going.

The ongoing takeover talks are stopping what they can do in the transfer window though and it will be interesting to see how long they last and if they can soon get to work on strengthening the squad for next season.
