Leeds Rhinos-bound Brad Arthur interviews for NRL coaching role

Leeds Rhinos will be keen to use this international break to address their head coaching vacancy, but one of the men who has been heavily linked, Brad Arthur, has now reportedly been interviewed for another job down the stretch.

It has been just under a week since Leeds Rhinos and Rohan Smith parted ways with the announcement that the Australian was set to leave the club, coming on Wednesday afternoon to the shock of many.

The decision itself was not shocking, but the timing was that Smith takes the bulk of the pre-game preparation for Friday night’s clash with Leigh Leopards, highlighting the bizarre decision to make the switch just over 48 hours before kick-off.

As it happened, Leeds would win the game with an inspired Brodie Croft leading the club to victory, while an emotional Headingley celebrated the life of Rob Burrow.

In the midst of that win and with a week off, Leeds Rhinos must prioritize finding a new head coach and former Parramatta Eels boss Brad Arthur has been the name at the top of the rumours, with earlier reports claiming he has been interviewed for the Leeds job .

However, it has now been reported that Brad Arthur has been interviewed for a role in the NRL, which could spell trouble for Leeds.

These reports came from The Daily Telegraph with the masthead reporting that representatives of the Perth NRL expansion bid have met with Brad Arthur about the prospect of him taking on the project.

With the NRL going from strength to strength, expansion is a hot topic and Perth is set to be one of the next teams to join the competition to give Rugby League a presence on Australia’s West Coast.

Conformable telegraph The report, those responsible for the bid to get Perth approved as the next expansion team have chosen Brad Arthur as the man for the job.

The Telegraph reports: “Sources speaking on condition of anonymity because of the confidential nature of the discussions told this panel that a representative of the Perth auction met Arthur on Monday as part of his efforts to enter the competition as early as 2027.”

Whether that would mean Brad Arthur is still available for a coaching role for the next two-and-a-half years is unclear, with Perth not expected to join the NRL until 2027 or later.

However, it creates an interesting scenario for Leeds Rhinos. If Brad Arthur is the man for the job, then he needs to make the 50-year-old an incredible offer to try to sway him to accept a project as mammoth as the one Perth is presenting.

Arthur did that with Parramatta as he made the club competitive again during his ten-year stay at the club, with former Leeds Rhinos man Danny Buderus recently talking about how skilled Arthur is, particularly in developing young people.
