Wrexham owner Ryan Reynolds hits back at Birmingham City ‘request’ for US game

Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds insists he has no interest in taking their League One clash with Birmingham City to America.

It was reported on Monday that the Blues had suggested moving their League One clash with Wrexham to the United States. The Blues are owned by American investment firm Knighthead Capital Management, while Wrexham were bought by actors Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2020.

NFL icon Tom Brady is also involved behind the scenes at the Blues as a minority investor, meaning the club’s future games with Wrexham are an attractive proposition for broadcasters here and across the pond.

No EFL match has ever been played outside the UK and the request is said to have been rejected by league officials. Reynolds has now assured Wrexham supporters that he has no interest in breaking with the tradition of English football by moving league matches to other countries.

One Wrexham fan tweeted Reynolds and McElhenney, saying: “It goes against every single one of the ‘guiding principles’ you stated publicly before buying the club. Let’s not start getting too greedy and breaking our promises.” Reynolds quickly replied, “I agree. And that’s why there were no discussions.”

The Blues and Wrexham have only played nine times before and the two teams have not met since a League Cup tie in 2006. There has been no league clash between them since the Blues beat Wrexham 5-2 in February 1995.
