Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus announces plans for Cornwall Bridge projects

Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus is pleased to announce significant progress on the Cornwall Bridge projects to improve infrastructure and provide safe and efficient transportation in the city.

Neuhaus expressed his appreciation for the collaborative efforts involved in this vital infrastructure project. “The progress of Cornwall’s bridge projects demonstrates our commitment to the effective maintenance of the county’s roads and bridges for residents and visitors alike,” he said. “We remain committed to advancing infrastructure initiatives that promote economic growth and improve the quality of life in Orange County.”

Bridge no. 2 of Main Street (image below): Located near Chadeayne Circle, carries County Route 9 (Main Street) over Idlewild Creek. The existing bridge was built in 1929 and has reached the end of its useful life. The project includes a complete bridge replacement and was designed to include pedestrian accommodations and safety improvements. Due to its proximity to residential and commercial buildings, the project will be built in phases to allow two-way traffic through the site over the next 18 months. The county contractor has mobilized the site and is working on demolition operations.

Bridge no. 1 of Main Street: Located north of Curie Road, carries County Route 9 (Main Street) over Idlewild Creek. Final design is underway and construction of this bridge is scheduled for the 2025 construction season.

Hasbrouck Avenue Bridge: The Hasbrouck Avenue Bridge project is currently in the preliminary design phase. Coordination efforts with the city engineer, water supervisor and other utility owners are ongoing. Tentatively scheduled for the 2026 construction season, this project underscores Orange County’s commitment to proactive infrastructure development and planning with local stakeholders.

“These bridge projects were designed to improve the walkability of downtown Cornwall and increase safety for both drivers and pedestrians,” said Public Works Commissioner Erik Denega. “Main Street Bridge Project no. 2 currently under construction is not just a bridge project. Courtesy of community feedback, it will bring aesthetic improvements including ornate parapet walls and ornamental light posts. Our team took a holistic approach, linking the needs of businesses and residents into the overall design.”
