Residents of Croydon House complain as fire alarms go off for hours

Residents of an Easton tower block were kept awake all night by faulty fire alarms. Avon Fire and Rescue attended the scene at 9pm on Sunday, but residents at Croydon House complained that at 11pm the faulty alarms were still going off.

One resident who contacted Bristol Live said it was the third time they had had problems with the new alarm system since it was installed in 2023. Several people took to X (formally Twitter) to say the alarms were still going off at 11pm: 00.

The small fire in the kitchen which had set off the alarms had already been extinguished by the time Avon Fire and Rescue arrived. Firefighters remained at the scene while they waited for an engineer from Bristol City Council to arrive and deactivate the alarms.

A resident who contacted Bristol Live about the fire wrote: “The fire alarm at Croydon House in Croydon Street, Easton went off last night. Disrupt everyone in the block and many of the surrounding boxes.

“One fire engine and one fire truck attended. Despite the fact that the on-site caretaker was present and there was no fire, the alarm continued for several hours.

“The brigade had to remain on site as the person responsible for disarming the alarm had to travel from Swansea. Last time it seems they had to travel from Leicester.
