New exhibition in tribute to Refugee Week

HERBERT Art Gallery and Museum, the new Voices Unveiled exhibition opened in tribute to Refugee Week, showcasing the stories of refugee women who have made their home in the UK.

The exhibition aims to foster empathy and compassion for those who have faced challenges in starting a new life in another country through evocative images and narratives.

Oscar, who is the creative force behind the exhibition, was inspired by his own experience of growing up in a refugee family.

Quoting Malala Yousafzai, he said: “A home is where you feel loved, safe and cherished.

“For me, home was wherever I found safety, acceptance and belonging.

“Most of my life was not my choice. I was born into a family of refugees, and my native country was not my native homeland.

“This year’s theme for Refugee Week is ‘Our Home.’

“My goal with this exhibit is to help all of us extend grace, compassion, and love to those of us who are trying to find our home in a foreign land.”

Each portrait is accompanied by the story of the woman featured, capturing the human spirit’s capacity for resilience and hope.

Indy Donald, Community Engagement Coordinator at Herbert, said: “We are really proud and excited to welcome this important collection to our location.

“This exhibition is part of my aim to amplify the voices of Coventry, a city of sanctuary.

“Ensuring the representation of the city’s diversity remains at the heart of Herbert’s community engagement efforts.

“Furthermore, Oscar’s work with community groups empowered individuals to tell their stories from home.

“While celebrating Refugee Week, Voices Unveiled serves as a reminder that Refugee Week extends throughout the year, highlighting the many contributions migrants make to the cities they now call home.”

The exhibition will run at the Herbert until June 29, before moving to the Cathedral’s Unity Chapel from July 1-7.
