Labor has announced its candidate to contest the North East Somerset and Hanham General Election.

Dan Norris will go head to head with incumbent Tory MP Jacob Rees Mogg.

The former child protection officer was elected mayor of the West of England in 2021 and was a former MP for the area between 1997 and 2010.

The former environment minister is a long-standing advocate for animal welfare and is president of the League Against Cruel Sports.

He said: “I am delighted and proud to have been selected as Labour’s candidate. This is my home and I am passionate about making it the best it can be.

“North East Somerset and Hanham is an extremely marginal seat and it is one where only Labor can beat the Tories.

“After fourteen years as a Tory, more and more people are telling me they want to turn the page.”
