Euro 2024: Cody Gakpo scores for Netherlands as two more groups end

The Liverpool forward scored early in the second half for his country – who was captained by Virgil van Dijkwith Ryan Gravenberch an unused substitute – as they were beaten 3-2 by Austria in Berlin.

The Dutch fell behind in the sixth minute to a Donyell Malen own goal, but Gakpo equalized with his second strike of the tournament.

He collected a pass to the left of the box, stepped into a defender and curled an assured finish into the far corner of the net.

Austria regained the lead shortly after the hour when Romano Schmid met a cross with a header that went in through Stefan de Vrij.

Holland restored parity for the second time in the game when Memphis Depay controlled a knockdown and looped the ball home.

But Austria then found a winner as Marcel Sabitzer struck from a tight angle – a goal that earned him his nation’s top spot in the section and sent the Dutch to third.

Elsewhere, in the same group, the defender of the Reds Ibrahima Konate was an unused substitute for France, who drew 1-1 with Poland in Dortmund, where Kylian Mbappe and Robert Lewandowski each scored penalties.

France finished second and therefore know they will face the to-be-confirmed runners-up in Group E on July 1.

Meanwhile, as third-best seed, the Netherlands must now wait to find out their opponents in the round of 16.

Later, Trent Alexander-Arnold he was an 84th-minute introduction for England, who drew 0-0 with Slovenia in Cologne.

The three lions – for whom Joe Gomez was on the bench – finished Group C in first place and will face a third-placed team in the knockout stages on Sunday afternoon.
