The Liverpool star rates Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes over Mohamed Salah

Diogo Jota has claimed Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes is a better player than Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

Jota hopes to lead Portugal to European Championship glory alongside Fernandes this summer. The pair both played their part in Roberto Martinez’s side’s opening win over the Czech Republic on Tuesday night.

At club level it was a mixed season for Jota. Jurgen Klopp’s farewell tour was derailed by United after knocking them out of the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage, with Salah and his teammates only winning the Carabao Cup as they battle to secure an unprecedented quadruple.

Jota was recently asked by Goal to compare his shooting ability to that of his Liverpool team-mates, placing himself at the top of the list, ahead of Salah and Darwin Nunez.

However, he was then asked to do the same with Portugal team-mates Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo, to which he replied: “Oof! I might have to come last here. Cristiano, Bruno and me.”

Fernandes enjoyed another excellent season with United last term, being named the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for the third time. Only two other United players have won the award on at least three separate occasions.

The Portugal international cast doubt on his future after United’s final home game of the 2023/24 season, revealing to Sky Sports that “the club have to want him” if he is to stay at Old Trafford.

MEN Sports understands United are open to offering Fernandes a new deal if he stays at the club. Fernandes’ current contract expires in 2026, although the club has the option of an additional year.
