FSG plan ‘imminent’ as four appointments point to Liverpool’s future after Jürgen Klopp

We already knew that Liverpool owner Fenway Sports Group (FSG) was looking to take the next step after almost 14 years in charge at Anfield, but the appointments that were confirmed on Friday underlined it even more.

Michael Edwards had already been lured back in a deal that was announced in March, before Richard Hughes was confirmed as sporting director to step in when his commitments this season with Bournemouth come to an end. Now Pedro Marques has arrived as director of football development after leaving Benfica, where he was technical director, and Julian Ward has also returned.

Marques will oversee “the development of youth players and their transition to first-team football,” according to The Athletic. Ward, who was sporting director for a year before leaving last summer, will once again work alongside Edwards for FSG.

With Jürgen Klopp certainly seems the American group has tried to reunite the old band at Liverpool as a means of replacing him. Arne Slot will come in as head coach rather than manager, with a team of experts around him in other roles. And having another club on the FSG roster will mean sharing ideas and potentially players.

There is a chance to work more with the South American market potentially, which is an area where Marques has experience. players like it Luis Díaz, Darwin Núñez and Enzo Fernández for much lower fees.

The Telegraph reported that a move to the multi-club model is “imminent” and all these appointments suggest that’s what’s in the works. Edwards is FSG’s managing director of football and has been tasked with finding and eventually managing a second football team alongside Liverpool. He clearly has more than enough experience around him to make it happen.
