Newham stabbing victim named teenager charged with murder

A teenager has been charged with murder after a 28-year-old man was stabbed in Newham, east London.

Met Police officers were called to Stondon Walk in East Ham at 3.18pm on Tuesday following reports of a man being assaulted.

Officers were joined by the London Ambulance Service who found Abiola Olalekan Akerele with stab wounds.

London’s Air Ambulance was also deployed.

Despite the efforts of emergency services to save his life, the 28-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Later that night, at around 11pm, officers arrested 18-year-old Rayhan Yasin Ali at an address in Newham.

The teenager was charged with murder on Friday and was due to appear at Thames Magistrates on Saturday.

A 17-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man were also arrested on Friday on suspicion of murder. Both remain in police custody.

Akerele’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

A post-mortem examination later determined the cause of death as a stab wound to the heart.

Detective Inspector Joanna Yorke from the Met’s Specialist Crime (Homicide) Command said: “Our investigation continues apace and we are working tirelessly to give the Abiola family the answers they deserve.

“This crime took place in broad daylight in a residential area at a time when we know many people were in their homes.

“I believe there will be people in the local community who have either seen, heard or know something about this incident. I urge these people to get in touch.”
