South Croydon, Bromley and Beckenham on Aldi’s wishlist – Inside Croydon

Aldi, the country’s fourth largest supermarket chain, is looking to get even bigger and is eyeing new store locations in South Croydon as well as Beckenham and Bromley as part of its rapid expansion drive.

To replenish stocks: could a new Aldi supermarket be coming to a high road near you?

Last month, Aldi carried out a little public research to find out where in the UK it needs new Aldi stores the most. Based on more than 4,000 responses, Aldi has identified priority areas in London, which also include Woodford and Surbiton, Notting Hill, Walthamstow and Barnet.

South Croydon has long had a site identified for a new Lidl and flats (load more flats) but this scheme has been stalled for several years. Further south, along Brighton Road in Purley, Marks and Spencer wants to convert an old dairy building into one of its new Food Hall properties, but things have been quiet there for a while too.

Aldi is working on its reputation as a supermarket with lower prices and excellent quality. It currently operates on Purley Way, Coulsdon town center and Selsdon among its 1,020 stores. Aldi, according to the company, “is committed to continuing to achieve its long-term target of over 1,500 stores in the UK”.

Jonathan Neale, head of real estate at Aldi, said: “We recognize that there is huge demand in certain regions for more stores, which is why we decided to get the public’s opinion on our latest list of priority locations. They have helped us identify where demand is greatest and we will continue to work to bring Aldi to as many people as possible.”

Anyone with a site that meets Aldi’s requirements should contact [email protected].

“Each site should be able to accommodate a 20,000 square foot store with around 100 parking spaces. Ideally, the location will be near a main road with good visibility and access,” says Aldi.
