Somerset Disabled CC beat Cornwall in thriller

Somerset hit the road for their first away game of the 2024 season, heading to Cornwall.

The weather was grey, cloudy and wet, delaying the start of the game by 30 minutes.

Somerset lost the toss and were bowled.

It was up to Kris Martin and Toby Jones to open up and see what they could do before the weather turned. With Somerset off to a fast start, the first wicket fell in the seventh over with Somerset on 50. Toby Jones was out, bowled by T Tickner. Dexter Adams was next but was run out after four balls, caught by T Tickner off L Roderick.

Charlie May now came into the middle and brought a strong partnership.

It was in the 19th over when a clever cut for four from Martin brought up his first 50 for Somerset in League matches, retiring on 53 not out.

Captain George Fox-Reid was to join May in the middle.

In the final Somerset put 200 on the board and with Charlie VERY close to 50 and two balls to go, a great try for 6 was hit by the fielder and only a single could be taken, leaving Charlie. at the non-strikers end and on 49 with one ball left in play.

George was bowled by L Roderick finishing on 11 and the innings was complete. Somerset on 203 for three in 30 overs.

Somerset came out to defend this total with Colin Hancock and Charlie May to open the attack.

J Perry was the first batter to be eliminated for a golden duck. A great catch by Kris Martin off the bowling of Colin Hancock gave Somerset an early breakthrough with Cornwall on 11.

Cameron Harris found B Mailes bowling next as the score stood at 56 for two. It wasn’t long before T Tickner was removed by some smart bowling by Paul Lewis and quick hands by skipper George Fox-Reid as the spinner took the batter out of the crease and George’s quick hands took the knock.

It was Lewis who struck next, D Herriott was dismissed after another catch by Cameron Harris. Score now 96 for four.

Cameron, not wanting to be left out, removed B Proud and with Charlie returning to the attack at the other end he then found his stride and put away J Raven and L Roderick with help from the clutch hands of Toby Jones. The score was now 159 for seven.

Here Somerset had to dig deep.

The game ended on the last ball with a run out by Ben Hallows and Cornwall finishing on 200 for eight.

A tough game in tough conditions for both sides and a second win for Somerset on the bounce!
