He joined the Tigers at the end of October last year following his commitments with Australia at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

In a statement, they said: “Palmer tendered his resignation following confirmation of mutual agreement with Dan McKellar to end his tenure as head coach at the club, citing that he was unable to commit to the role to fully progress in the new season.

“Meanwhile, with the pre-season program starting on Monday (July 1), Neil Fowkes – the club’s senior Academy forwards coach – will take over Scrum Coach responsibilities for the senior men’s team.

“Fowkes joined the Tigers before last season after spells at Championship clubs Ealing Trailfinders (forwards coach) and Nottingham Rugby (head coach and forwards coach) as well as two years as scrum coach with former Gallagher Premiership club Wasps, during 2020-22.

“All other assistant coaches and performance staff, as announced earlier this month, have started work in the 24/25 season.”

“The process to appoint a new head coach is ongoing, with an announcement to be made prior to the return of the playing group on July 1.”

Kevin Sinfield among favorites to be next Leicester Tigers boss

We review the leading candidates to succeed Dan McKellar, who has left Leicester Tigers by mutual consent after just one season at the helm of the Premiership club.

The 47-year-old former ACT Brumbies head coach has stepped down as Australia’s forwards coach to take up the job on a “long-term contract”, becoming the permanent replacement for Steve Borthwick, who left for to coach England.

However, Leicester Tigers had a disappointing season, finishing eighth in the Premiership, 11 points off a play-off position. In addition, they were knocked out by Leinster in the round of 16 of the Investec Champions Cup and lost to Gloucester in the Premiership Cup final.

In a statement, Leicester said McKellar’s departure had been agreed “following extensive discussions on the future direction of the club”.

Favorites to replace it

#5. Martin Johnson – 40/1

The idea of the former Lions captain returning to Welford Road as director of rugby to turn things around has been a popular rumour.

However, RUCK reports that this scenario is unlikely. Johnson seems uninterested in ending his self-imposed hiatus.

After being sacked as England manager following a disappointing 2011 World Cup campaign in which England were knocked out by France in the quarter-finals, Johnson has stayed out of the limelight.

He focused on commercial work and family time, not interested in re-entering the high-pressure world of domestic rugby.
