Birmingham hits a record for the third consecutive day

Another day, another record for Birmingham.

The National Weather Service reported that the temperature reached 101 degrees in Birmingham Wednesday afternoon, breaking the previous record of 100 degrees set in 1954.

It is the third day in a row that Birmingham has added to the record book. The Magic City tied records for both Monday (99 degrees) and Tuesday (101 degrees).

The average high temperature for June 26 in Birmingham is 90 degrees, according to the weather service.

Birmingham wasn’t the only one to add to the record books. Anniston hit 99 degrees on Wednesday, tying a record set in 1954.

And other areas around the state were very warm again. Here are some of today’s high temperatures from the weather service:

* Huntsville: 100 degrees (record 106 in 1930)

* Mobile: 94 degrees (record 101 in 1914)

* Montgomery: 101 degrees (record 104 in 1914)

* Muscle Shoals: 99 degrees (record 108 in 1914)

* Troy: 99 degrees (record 108 in 1914)

* Tuscaloosa: 97 degrees (record 102 in 1954)

Tuscaloosa didn’t set a temperature record Wednesday, but it did set a daily precipitation record, according to the weather service. Tuscaloosa recorded 1.15 inches of rain Wednesday, breaking the record of 0.95 inches set in 2022.

Rain and some strong to strong thunderstorms moved into Alabama beginning Wednesday afternoon, and a severe thunderstorm watch was in effect for several counties:

Thursday could bring a break from the record heat. The weather service is forecasting temperatures to “only” reach the 80s across most of the state (see Thursday’s forecast at the top of this post). There is also a chance of additional rain.
