Coventry nursery where children ‘help out in the local community’

A nursery in Coventry has been described as ‘inspiring’ and ‘family orientated’ for children and offers an ‘excellent curriculum’ by Ofsted. It said children were “settling quickly” and taking part in “innovative activities” at My Little Angels Daycare on Lesingham Drive in Tile Hill.

Inspectors visited the nursery on Thursday 4 April. The nursery received its first Ofsted report ‘Outstanding’ in all categories from its previous rating of ‘Good’.

Inspectors describe staff as knowing children “extremely well” and being able to tailor their interactions and routines to meet the needs of each individual child. Children are said to be eager and confident to take part in the “exciting” activities staff provide to encourage children’s natural curiosity and enthusiasm for learning.

When children enter the nursery, they are mesmerized by the ‘magical’ and ‘inspiring’ surroundings that capture their interest and challenge their learning. All children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, make rapid progress from their individual learning points.

Staff are said to provide opportunities for children to spend time outdoors daily, which is seen as an extension of indoor learning. The nursery has created an outdoor space that provides children with a multitude of experiences that support their learning and encourage fun. Staff expertly weave children’s next steps for learning into activities, meaning children have fun as they learn and develop.

Children also show empathy for their friends, while older children show younger children how to properly use equipment such as a computer keyboard. They are also eager to complete small tasks and are “proud” to receive high praise for their kindness. This means that children develop and develop a high level of self-esteem.

Inspectors say the nursery has a “strong, knowledgeable and cohesive” management team who are passionate about giving children the best start in life. They are described as “forward thinking” and are always looking for ways to improve. They assess the nursery and activities and make changes based on the individual needs of the children.

Staff are proactive in implementing activities to ensure they suit each child’s individual learning style, interests and next steps. The management team monitors the practice and provides ongoing professional development to enable staff to further improve their ‘excellent practice’.

Inspectors noted that the nursery is very much part of the local community. The children go to the litter and carefully pick up the rubbish using the long-handled clamps and the staff organize food banks which the children take to the local centre. They have also introduced a book exchange for children attending the nursery and those in the local community to help children and families have access to books and stories.

Staff always talk to children to work on their communication. They ask questions and give children time to respond, and use simple signs to allow less verbal or younger children to communicate their needs.

The children love the singing sessions and join in with the words and actions, with their imaginative skills described as ‘superb’. They pretend to go on a bear hunt and quietly sneak into the bear cave the nursery has created at the bottom of the garden. They light torches to look for bears and then laugh as they run. Kids also make potions and brew tea in the mud kitchen, using real utensils and tap water.

The nursery provides an inclusive environment where children, staff and families are respected. Parents are encouraged to cook national dishes with the children and talk to them about their cultures. Children see photographs of different places of worship, such as a temple or a church, and try to reproduce them in their constructions.

Parents say they can’t speak “enough” about the leaders and staff at My Little Angels Daycare. They say they get a lot of support and staff go “the extra mile” to look after their children. They also added that their children are coming on “in leaps and bounds” because of the work the staff do with them.
