Candidates bid for Leeds youth vote in student hotspot

Meanwhile, for other students at the hustings, housing was a big concern.

A student asked the participating candidates what they would do to improve the condition of student housing.

Emily Taburn, University of Leeds’ business and communications officer, who organized and hosted the event, said: “I’m currently living in a pretty horrible student house.

“There’s mold all over the walls, the ceiling leaks when it rains and it really feels like there’s no one to turn to for that.”

Tom Appleton, 20, was another student who thought housing should be higher on the agenda.

He said politicians should introduce rules to prevent students from paying for accommodation while at home on holiday.

Also taking part was Hannah Catterall, 22, who agreed that the major parties had ignored the needs of young people.

“Talking about issues that really impact our future — that’s what I’d like to see change,” she said.

A recent graduate and current union welfare officer, Hannah said she wished politicians would focus more on issues such as mental health, the climate and the situation in Gaza.
