Mason Greenwood has already hinted at a transfer decision amid talks at Manchester United

Mason Greenwood has no shortage of suitors this summer, with an exit from Manchester United surely inevitable.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe had suggested in February that a decision on his departure had not been finalised, despite the club saying in August he would continue his career away from Old Trafford following a backlash from fans to their attempts to reinstate him.

Greenwood has not played for the club since January 2022 after being arrested on charges of attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behavior – charges which were dropped in February 2023. The player has always denied all charges .

MEN Sport understands that efforts to get Greenwood out of United for good are progressing, with just one year left on his contract. Juventus, Valencia and Benfica are just three of a number of clubs who are interested in the 22-year-old.

Lazio are currently in talks, while United are talking to French club Marseille over a potential move, having caught the eye of both during their spells in Spain last campaign.

Greenwood spent the season on loan at Getafe, registering 10 goals and six assists in 36 games. The Spanish side are keen to facilitate a return deal for the forward, who said he was made to feel “happy” at the club last term.

Getafe boss Angel Torres last week appeared to suggest the player was heading for a comeback. He said: “We’re hoping to give good news soon and I hope it’s another year.

“It looks like it will continue for another year. With each passing day, there are more possibilities, but you have to be cautious.”

The striker may be too expensive for them and several other suitors, while any suggestion of a loan deal would have to extend United to retain his value, a decision that would be met with heavy criticism.

Furthermore, last month Greenwood seemed to indicate that a return to Getafe was not a guaranteed prospect, despite winning the player of the season award.

In fact, his farewell message to the club’s supporters inferred that he would be plying his trade elsewhere.

Taking to social media at the end of the season in May, Greenwood wrote: “Incredibly grateful to the Getafe family and fans for an amazing season. Thank you for making me feel welcome and one of yours.

“I enjoyed every second, together with my colleagues and the club. A bittersweet ending, but it was a pleasure to play for you, I wish you all the best.”

Of course, there is still a long way to go in the transfer window, but these comments do not paint a figure who was initially willing to consider a return. Realistically, Getafe cannot compete financially with interested clubs.

Greenwood’s exit will help stabilize United’s fragile position under the Premier League’s spending rules, with the academy graduate fee counting towards the “pure” profit given it cost the club nothing to bring him in.

United are believed to be operating on a net spending budget of just £50m this summer, so such sales would be necessary for them to get all the targets they want.

Greenwood could yet play at Old Trafford again if he signs for a Europa League side that United could face in the competition.
