Andy Robertson’s leadership questioned after Scotland exit from Euro 2024

Alan McInally has sparked debate by suggesting that Andy Robertson’s role as Scotland captain is largely down to his Liverpool credentials.

Robertson, now 30 and an Anfield stalwart since his move from Hull City in July 2017, has been the cornerstone of Liverpool’s success over the past seven years. With 297 appearances for the Merseyside giants, he has lifted the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and two League Cups – among other trophies.

As Liverpool’s left-back, Robertson’s place in the team looks secure, especially with Arne Slot at the helm next season. His international duty saw him play every minute for Scotland in their disappointing Euro 2024 campaign, where the team finished bottom of Group A with just one point.

The fallout from Scotland’s poor performance at Euro 2024 has led to scrutiny of Steve Clarke’s team selections. In addition, former Scotland striker McInally questioned Robertson’s captaincy, pointing to a special reason for his leadership role.

While speaking to Betfair, McInally noted: Speaking to Betfair, McInally said: “I wouldn’t have minded Scott McTominay or John McGinn captaining Scotland. Steve Clarke opted for ‘Robbo’ for the simple reason that he plays for Liverpool. He’s He’s had three or four incredibly good years and he knows him and guys appreciate players like that. And it’s a bit older than McGinn and McTominay.

“That’s why he’s the captain and I have no problem with that. But I think if you said to Robertson, look, I’ll give it to McTominay or John McGinn, I think they’d be like us. You are a team here. It’s not about me.

“In terms of captaincy, we have three players who could be captain. Maybe four if you throw in Grant Hanley, because he’s got over 50 caps, and he just brings a bit more steel to our back line. But outside. with that we don’t have captains in the team – we don’t have anyone to carry that gravitas.
