I’ve only seen the Arsenal manager go completely mad once – in the Liverpool dressing room

Theo Walcott has revealed how Arsene Wenger once went “absolutely mad” with his Arsenal team in the Anfield dressing room.

Unlike long-time adversaries Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho, the Frenchman, nicknamed ‘Le Professeur’, has always been perceived as much calmer and quieter.

Walcott has consequently backed up such a perception, revealing he only saw his former manager miss it once during his time at the Emirates – and that came during a trip to Liverpool.

“The only time I’ve ever seen Arsene Wenger go into the dressing room and go completely mad was when we played Liverpool away,” revealed Walcott, speaking on William Hill’s podcast. Up front with Simon Jordan. “That was the only time I ever thought it was very out of character.

“He wasn’t happy with the discipline or the way we played, we didn’t play the Arsenal way. We deviated from the philosophy that the team built. When we got away from the way Arsene wanted to play, he was never happy.”

Although Walcott does not say which visit to Anfield angered Wenger, the first guesses would likely be Liverpool’s famous 5-1 win against Arsenal in February 2014. However, the former England international tore his ACL in a win in the FA Cup against Tottenham Hotspur the month before. so he was absent from the team that day as a result.

Joining Arsenal from Southampton in January 2006, the boyhood Liverpool fan made 10 Anfield appearances in his 12 years with the Gunners and was an unused substitute on a further three occasions.

The Reds would win three and draw five of their 13 meetings, while Walcott would register two assists at Liverpool’s famous ground – in the famous 4-2 win for Rafa Benitez’s side in the Champions League in April 2008 and the infamous draw 4 -4 that derailed their Premier League. title tax in April 2009.

Meanwhile, Walcott’s three defeats at Anfield are completed by Jurgen Klopp’s Reds, 3-1 winners in March 2017 and 4-0 winners in August 2017. Unless any of those defeats have sent Wenger completely mad , then perhaps a 2-2 draw in December 2014 or a 3-3 draw in January 2016 comes into play, with Martin Skrtel and Joel Allen scoring last-minute equalizers each time.

Unfortunately, on this occasion, Walcott kept us guessing.
