Carabao Cup semi-finalists Middlesbrough have been drawn by Championship rivals Leeds United in the first round of the 2024-25 competition.

Boro were beaten 6-2 by Chelsea over two legs in January to miss out on a Wembley final after taking a 1-0 lead against the Premier League side in the first leg.

Derby County – back in the Championship next term – host East Midlands rivals Chesterfield, who return to the competition for the first time in six years after winning promotion back to the English Football League.

Bromley, who made their debut in the competition following promotion to the EFL in May, will welcome fellow League Two side AFC Wimbledon.

The first round of matches will take place in the week commencing 12 August, with the final set for Wembley on Sunday 16 March 2025.

Luton and Burnley, who, like Sheffield United, have been relegated straight back to the Championship for 2024-25, will go into the second round draw along with 13 Premier League sides.

Holders Liverpool will join proceedings in the third round as they are among the other seven top-flight sides involved in next season’s European competition.

As part of the new EFL television deal next season, all 93 Carabao Cup matches will be shown on Sky Sports.

In total, there are six ties with Championship sides against League Two opposition, including Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle hosting Cheltenham Town and West Bromwich Albion traveling to Fleetwood Town.

The first round is regionalized into northern and southern sections, with 38 teams in the northern half and 32 teams in the southern half.

The EFL has confirmed that this year’s competition semi-finals will continue to be played over two legs in 2024-25, despite the potential for a clash of fixtures with European competitions.

Currently, three of the weeks currently used for the EFL Cup could feature a round of Champions League and Europa League fixtures.
