Giants Women vs Wigan Warriors

Huddersfield Giants Women were beaten 102-0 by Wigan Warriors in Round 3 of the Betfred Women’s Super League.

The Warriors rallied in the form of Mary Coleman and Victoria Molyneux, but Mary Coleman’s 5 try run stole the show.

Rachel Thompson opened the scoring in the 6th minute.

Anna Davies exploited the struggling Giants defense to pick up a brace, Mary Coleman followed suit. Scrum-half Emma Knowles made easy conversions given her proximity to the sticks.

24-0, Frankie Townend found an opportunity to respond with a clean sprint 40 meters out of the Wigan half. A kick over the line of defence, subsequent plays increased the chances of a score, but it was uncapitalised.

Handed the ball from scoring position, Thompson was doubled.

The Cherry & Whites caught the Giants on a goal line in the 30th minute. Tiring from the strong attack, the wall would eventually come crashing down from Grace Banks’ left. 36-0 with Knowles’ conversion.

Ex-England lost Vicky Molyneux, Knights’ Coleman ended the first half with converted tries to leave Wigan enjoying a 48-0 lead.

HALF TIME

Just 2 minutes into the second half, the Warriors were back on the attack. Davies took the hat-trick with a slice through the line.

Coleman soon completed her 5 try run with Molyneux adding another to her tally.

Australian import Rease Casey was a late addition to the Wigan 2024 squad, although he made up for it with a quick break from halfway for 4 points.

Warriors’ Jenna Forbister, on debut, certainly made it a memorable one, cutting off the line from an overlap into the left corner.

Center Kaitlin Hilton and academy product Isabel Rowe left their tackles to go to the whitewash in the final minutes.

Coleman, netting her 5th try of the game, and Emma Knowles’ conversion brought up the century for Wigan on the stroke of full-time, leading to a 102-0 defeat.

Lori Halloran’s Giants will be in action at Laund Hill on May 26, 2pm, taking on York Valkyrie.
