GPAD refurbished a previously dilapidated sports hall in Barnet, North London.

Known as the Copthall Pavilion and located on the Copthall playing fields, the two-storey building from the 1960s was renovated by GPAD in collaboration with London-based design practice Poor Collective. The pavilion, which opened to the public on June 8, serves as a community center.

The renovation includes a new color scheme on the exterior of the building, as well as a triptych mural reflecting the former sporting use of the pavilion.

Catherine Staniland, director at New London Architecture, which runs the festival, said: “As the LFA celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, putting community at the heart of Copthall is testament to the new kinds of thinking and collaboration we are about so proud to support in this city.”

“This is the second year that Barnet has formed a key destination in the festival program and this year there will be over 60 events in the borough that respond to this year’s theme ‘Reimagine’.

The project is the result of a competition run by the London Architecture Festival and the London Borough of Barnet, which launched an open call for proposals to modify the pavilion to provide a new space for local and youth sports teams. The open call ended on March 11, 2024.
