Fire at Ponte Nuovo restaurant forces closure of High Street

Explosive situation: firefighters had to remove gas canisters from the scene when they tackled last night’s blaze at a popular restaurant under Croydon Pass

Croydon High Street in both directions was closed for hours last night as fire crews from multiple stations battled a blaze in outbuildings connected to one of Croydon’s top restaurants, Ponte Nuovo , and its Fun House nightclub complex.

Part of a warehouse behind the building was on fire. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters removed four gas cylinders, cooling them as a precaution to avoid any explosion.

The brigade was called at 20.32 and the fire was under control by 21.43. Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters from Croydon, Wallington, Norbury and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.
