The Sheffield United player is attracting interest from Spain as the Blades admire a promising game

The Sheffield United goalkeeper conundrum is one he needs to get right this summer. With Wes Foderingham leaving to join West Ham United and the club releasing academy graduate Jordan Amissah, attention now turns to the two remaining senior goalkeepers in Adam Davies and Ivo Grbic.

It was previously claimed that the Blades had offered Davies a new contract, but negotiations stalled over the potential takeover. Meanwhile, United are open to selling Croatian goalkeeper Grbic after a disastrous spell with the club at the end of last season, where he conceded 32 goals in ten appearances.

Now reports in Spain, via Angel Garcia, claim that La Liga side Getafe are interested in signing the 28-year-old, along with second-tier side Levante.

The Blades urgently need to sort out the goalkeeping department and have quite a few promising players to choose from, but they must be willing to pay decent money for one. Names such as: Carl Rushworth, who impressed during his loan spell at Swansea City from Brighton, Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson has been linked with United and Plymouth Argyle’s Michael Cooper should be the priority for the number one spot.

All three of these goalkeepers have shown good shot-stopping ability and the composure to play from the back – something that let the Blades down massively last season, and as such the teams pressed hard as they were not afraid that United will beat the press. .

Sheffield United need to find a quality goalkeeper

With the names mentioned above, Rushworth is understood to be keen to stay on the south coast and feature in Brighton’s squad of the day. While Sunderland are said to want £15m for Patterson, Southampton have since been credited with interest. Plymouth’s Michael Cooper recently rejected a contract extension. Meanwhile, The Star report that the 24-year-old has plenty of admirers at Bramall Lane.

As things stand, it looks like the most likely player to join the Blades from the above list is Michael Cooper, and he would also be the cheapest of the three, as his contract expires in just 12 months.

Last season Cooper made 19 appearances for Plymouth in a struggling Championship side that narrowly avoided the drop on the final day. He kept six clean sheets during that time. In the previous campaign in League One, Cooper made 29 appearances in which he kept 11 clean sheets before unfortunately suffering a cruciate ligament injury which kept him out of action for up to several months in the 2023/24 campaign .

Cooper has all the attributes to become a future Premier League player, but unfortunately for him, his ACL injury in 2022/23 has hampered his chances of impressing top clubs in the last year or so.

Sheffield United must be willing to splash the cash on a talented goalkeeper like Cooper, who is out of contract next summer.
