50,000 thousand fine for fans who illegally broadcast Premier League football

Football fans who use their Amazon Fire TV Stick devices to stream games illegally have been warned they could face fines of up to 50,000 as home raids become “inevitable” in a new crackdown on illegal streaming. The Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU), among other authorities across the UK, is stepping up its efforts to tackle this crime.

Major raids on illegal streaming operations have been carried out in collaboration with Internet Service Providers (ISPs). This action has been stepped up since the introduction of the Digital Economy Act 2017, which targets both providers and viewers of illegal streaming services.

The legislation has equipped UK law enforcement with stronger tools to aggressively pursue and prosecute those involved in digital piracy. In the UK, illegal streaming is an offense under copyright law.

Offenders can face heavy fines and prison terms of up to ten years. Those found to be distributing illegal streams have been hit with fines of more than £50,000, reports Birmingham Live.

Although viewers of these streams usually face less severe fines, they can still be hit with fines that often exceed several thousand pounds, reflecting the seriousness with which the UK approaches copyright infringement. Warnings have also been issued about the associated cyber risks.

Downloading or streaming from unauthorized sites can lead to substantial online threats, compromise of personal data and damage to devices. Such cyber risks often lead to data theft or significant hardware problems.
