Leeds United stars had to bring their own breakfast and lunch as well as buy their own socks

Stephen Warnock has lifted the lid on the bizarre cost-cutting measures that were introduced at Leeds United after Massimo Cellino took control of the club

A former Leeds United star recalled when they were asked to bring their packed lunch.

This unusual request came after Massimo Cellino took over in 2014 and began implementing cost-cutting measures. Stephen Warnock, who previously played for Liverpool, Blackburn and Aston Villa, was surprised by the changes, the Daily Star reports.

He described the situation on the Undr the Cosh podcast, saying: “Massimo Cellino, that was a *** show. The setting at Thorp Arch was incredible, good training facilities. They had a pool, ice baths and jacuzzis. I remember being in the jacuzzi and it came in.

“He went around us, came back and talked to one of the guys who was showing him the shift and said, ‘This can go’ about the ice bath and the jacuzzi. He said, “It needs to be emptied” about the pool. It reduced costs. All.

“I get a message and I think, ‘this is a wrap, this can’t be true.’ “You have to buy your own socks and socks.” And I’m thinking, “really?” Next message, “you must bring your packed lunch and breakfast if you want breakfast”.

“‘You can do it in the kitchen, there will be a toaster, a kettle and a fridge.’ We got rid of all the cooks and everything… it was an absolute disaster.”

Leeds scrapped to escape the Championship and claim their place in the Premier League at the time. However, Cellino’s pinch-hitting methods may not have been the kind of revolution needed to climb the ranks in the first place.

Warnock, who spent two seasons with Leeds between 2013 and 2015, also expressed his gratitude to an “unbelievable” member of staff, former footballer turned pundit Lucy Ward, who stepped in to manage the players’ tables.
