GMP officer accused of misconduct in open court denies allegations

A Greater Manchester Police officer accused of misconduct in public office has denied the allegations against her. PC Choni Kenny, 26, based in the GMP district, City of Manchester, is charged with misconduct in public office; conspiracy to commit misconduct in public office; and intentionally encouraging or assisting an inmate to possess a cell phone in a prison.

The crimes would have taken place between April 1, 2021 and June 22 last year. Details of the misconduct charge imply Ms Kenny failed to inform GMP of her dealings with “criminal associates”; is alleged to have access to police information and intelligence without a legitimate purpose; and allegedly shared information with “criminal associates” and overlooked known crime she had a duty to report.

Ms Kenny is alleged to have conspired with a man by accessing information and police information without a legitimate purpose and sharing it with him. The third charge alleges that she carried out telephone conversations with an inmate on duty, which she knew he was conducting on an illegal cell phone, and charged his cell phones with the intent to encourage or support the offense of possessing a cell phone in prison.

Mrs Kenny, of Tennyson Road, Cheadle, Stockport, who has been suspended since her arrest, appeared for the charge at Liverpool Crown Court wearing a black trouser suit and a low-cut white top. She pleaded not guilty to all charges and Judge Robert Trevor-Jones remanded her on unconditional bail to await her trial, which is expected to last three weeks, starting on April 21.
