The mother killed the child while she was in a mental health facility in Leeds

Speaking in court on Friday, Dr Suraj Shenoy told the Honorable Mrs Justice Christina Lambert KC he was concerned that MacFarlane’s GP had missed the “psychotic elements of her presentation”.

“He did what he could do and tried to get help. She had doubts about her treatment, but that is related to her psychotic belief,” Dr Shenoy said.

“She was in the hospital. The fact that she was discharged does not automatically translate into her health status.”

The court was told that on December 20, MacFarlane attended the facility’s Christmas party with baby Evelyn, where she appeared to be “in high spirits”.

Shortly before 16:00 GMT, she took her daughter for an unsupervised walk, which she was allowed to do because of the progress staff believed she had made.

During that walk, she called her husband to discuss Christmas plans.

He then texted her two hours later, saying: “I want you to know how much I love you, the life we’ve created and we dream of including our beautiful baby girl.”

However, the court heard that 13 minutes after this message was sent, she called her husband to say “Evelyn’s gone”, before calling 999 to report that she had killed her daughter.
