Brian Mulroney’s state funeral honored a former leader and family man

The funeral service will take place on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Notre-Dame Basilica (110 Notre-Dame Street West) in Montreal.

The funeral service will take place on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Notre-Dame Basilica in Montréal. Prior to the ceremony, a funeral cortege, which includes a Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) mounted escort, a Canadian Armed Forces escort and honor guard, the Royal Canadian Air Force Band and RCMP pallbearers, will proceed to Notre-Basilica Ladies of Montreal.

The ceremony will include religious components led by the Most Reverend Christian Lépine, Archbishop of Montréal, concelebrated by Miguel Castellanos, PSS, rector of Notre-Dame Basilica and the Reverend Monsignor Francis Coyle, CSS, pastor of Saint Patrick’s Basilica. This will include prayers, readings, hymns and a communion.

A 19-gun salute will be fired at the end of the ceremony at Clock Tower Pier in Montreal’s Old Port

What honors come with state funerals?

  • The Government of Canada has flown the Canadian national flag on the Peace Tower and all federal buildings and facilities in Canada from February 29 until sunset on the day of the funeral, March 23, 2024.

  • Federal state funerals in Canada are held to honor and commemorate current or past governors general, current or past premiers, and serving members of the ministry. In addition, any eminent Canadian can be given a state funeral at the Prime Minister’s discretion.
