A GMP spokesman said they had received a number of reports of the dog getting out of control and then finding XL Bully was scrapped as “the last possible option”. It is unclear the extent of the woman’s injuries, but she is still being treated.

They said: “At around 9pm this evening (Friday 28 June 2024) we were called to Gladstone Road in Eccles to several reports of a dangerous out of control dog which was subsequently attacking members of the public and injured a woman in the process.

“Initially, both local officers and members of the public were unable to regain control of the dog. Specialist officers were deployed and attempted to safely secure the XL Bully but were unsuccessful. This meant, unfortunately, because of the risk and damage it caused as a banned breed. it was destroyed on site as the last possible option.

“Two men were later arrested and detained after confronting officers. The female victim is still being treated for her injuries. We understand the concern this incident will raise in the community, but our officers have a duty to act in difficult situations on a regular basis to keep everyone safe.” GMP said inquiries into the dog’s owner were ongoing.
