Archie Gray, Oliver Skipp, Joe Rodon and the Tottenham-Leeds transfer triangle

Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United are eyeing several of each other’s players this summer with potential moves, football.london understand.

Spurs’ transfer window has yet to kick off, with only Timo Werner signing another loan for a second season and Lucas Bergvall arriving next week following his £8.5m move from Djurgarden in February, the only actions of the north London club so far in what has been a quiet window for much of the Premier League so far.

Leeds missed out on promotion to the Premier League despite a season in which they took 90 points in the Championship, only to lose in the play-off final to Southampton. The loss of the Premier League and the riches it brings is expected to mean Leeds need to bring in plenty of revenue, with a reported £190m in transfer fees owed and one of the highest wages in the Championship, while boss Daniel Farke will also need to bring in new signings this summer.

Both Tottenham and Leeds are understood to be eyeing each other’s squads with envious eyes towards some of their players.

football.london previously reported that Spurs have a strong interest in Archie Gray, the talented 18-year-old Leeds academy product who played 50 games for them last season. Unfortunately for the north London side, most of the top Premier League clubs are keeping a close eye on him, as well as other teams in Europe.

A midfielder by trade, Gray shone at right-back last season for the Championship club, which would mark him as the perfect inverted full-back in Ange Postecoglou’s system at Tottenham. The teenager’s form kept Djed Spence out of the Leeds squad for the first half of last season, playing a part in the Spurs right-back’s return and loan move back to Genoa.

Leeds would not miss losing such a popular player with fans, one who some label a generational talent and Gray may well want to stay at his boyhood club for a few more years as he is still so young. Should he decide to move, he would have his choice of clubs and there is, according to various reports, a price tag of between £30m and £50m for the talented teenager. Those financial problems with the cost of losing promotion will require some big exits and a revamp of Farke’s squad.

Among others, Crysencio Summerville has also been linked with a move away from Leeds this summer after a season on the left wing at Elland Road that produced 21 goals and 10 assists under Farke. Tottenham and Liverpool have both been among the clubs linked with the 22-year-old Dutchman. Another possible departure from Leeds is 20-year-old Wilfried Gnonto, who has been linked with Spurs and various clubs in the past.

Leeds look the other way and at Tottenham. If Gray leaves this summer, or maybe even if he doesn’t, football.london understands that Farke would be keen on a reunion with Oliver Skipp. The 23-year-old played under the German in the 20/21 season as a man in midfield at Championship-winning Norwich.

Skipp has now made 106 appearances for Tottenham’s first team but is keen to get regular football next season after his 21 games last season brought just seven starts, including five in the Premier League.

Leeds are expected to look at Skipp in terms of both a permanent move and a loan move – depending on their financial situation. The lure of playing for Farke again would be appealing to the young midfielder, although a number of Premier League clubs are also likely to enter the equation if Tottenham decide to let the player leave.

The problem for Spurs and the player is that Skipp is a rare commodity in their squad: a homegrown player trained by a senior club, which is useful for the team’s Europa League entry. With three years left on his contract and 77 Premier League appearances at his age, he won’t come cheap for anyone looking for a permanent move, which won’t help Leeds in their current situation.

Another player Leeds would love to be reunited with Farke, albeit a quicker reunion, would be Joe Rodon. The 26-year-old Wales international was almost ever-present for the German last season, making 50 appearances and being one of Yorkshire’s best players in the Championship.

football.london understands Leeds remain in the hunt for Rodon, with the two teams that won automatic promotion to the Premier League last season, Ipswich and Leicester, also showing the greatest interest.

The Foxes now have Rodon’s former Swansea boss Steve Cooper in charge but also face a potential hefty points deduction for breaching profit and sustainability rules. Other clubs could yet enter the mix for the Welshman, who has 12 months left on his contract, with Southampton among others having previously shown interest.

The coming summer will show whether Tottenham and Leeds end up doing a lot of business together or nothing at all.
